Product packaging can be defined as a technology that involves concealing and protecting products for purposes of storage, distribution and use. It can also be defined as the process of designing, evaluating and manufacturing packages for products. In other words we can say it is a coordinated system that makes sure goods or products are ready for transport, logistics, sale, ware housing and end use. This is a very ideal technology because it protects, contains, transports, preserves, informs and sells the product. It is very much integrated in almost every country in the world by government, industrial, institutional, business and even in personal ventures.
It is seen in the ancient era that the first packages used were made up of the natural materials that were available during that time. For instance, thy would use wooden barrels, wooden boxes, pottery vases, basket of reeds, wine skins, ceramic amphorae, woven bags and the like.
There are other materials that were processed and used as packages and got developed with time like bronze and the early glass. In the modern era tinplate was invented which enabled people to store their products in tins. Product packing has many other uses than just packing in product for concealment. It offers protection against any physical interference like from electrostatic discharge, mechanical shock temperature and the like. It provides a blurrier protection like from water vapor, oxygen, dust and so on. Apart from those it can be used to transmit information like through the labels that may be put on the external face of the package. Marketing has been made a quite easy when product packaging to effect and as it reached its true potential. Product packaging has cover also most every corner concerning security because there are packages that are tamper resistant in that they can deter manipulation of the package and they can also be tamper-evident meaning they can show if a package is tampered with or not. Packages are also designed to have features that add some kind of convenience in handling, display, distribution, reclosing, recycling, sale, stacking, ease in disposal and reusing.
